Cam/head setup on a 91 305 tpi?
Cam/head setup on a 91 305 tpi?
I am thinking of buying a cam and heads for the 305, i've heard that 350 heads work well, but require some work to get them to function properly on a 305. Somone also said that there is a set of heads called S/R torquer(sp?)? I really don't have many mods on the car, so this would be one of the first. My friend is getting mad at me for EVEN thinking of doing mods to the 305, he says i should get a 350. But, i just to know what kind of options i have with the 3o5
but, i am thinking of a 350 swap if the 305 is really going to be a waste of time.

1991 Z28 305 TPI.
Mods: Hypertech Airfoil, gutted airboxes, K&Ns,polished 91' rims (they turned pink!), and all rear end bushings & tranny mout are energy suspension poly ones now
EDIT: I hope this is on the right board, i didn't know if it belonged in motor swap, power adder, or TPI so, i figured general engine would be ok.
MORE TO COME: Any suggestions on what to do next? I really want to try and make the 305 run 13s (i've mostly been doing basic repair to the car, but now most of its done i have money to mod!)e-mail me@ abraham_39@hotmail.com

Popular Hot Rod did a 305 dyno comparison test in the Dec 2000 issue. Starting with a freshened up .030 305 w/stock heads, full length headers, Comp roller, stock TPI, they came up with 215 hp @ 4500, pretty close to what the factory claimed. Changing only the heads to bowl-blended World S/R Torquer 305, they passed 215 hp @ 3300 rpm, max 266 @ 5000. That's an impressive gain for changing only one component.
If you go with those heads, get headers and a good flowing cat & exhaust. Call Comp Cams or similar company and tell them what you have, what you want, what you can do (such as emissions). Look in the tech articles on how to port your TPI plenum.
You can get a 305 to run pretty well and still spend less than you would on a 350. And, you can say, "It's just a 305."

[/B][/QUOTE]Summit sells a set of S/R torquers for the 305 engines. They have the smaller 58cc chambers that work well on the 305 engine. They also have 1.94/1.50 valves. 2.02/1.60 valve heads usually have clearance problems in a 305, requiring machine work to the top of the cylinder bores. Competition Cams and Crane's CompuCam line offer some good choices for a camshaft.

Ask yourself a question. Are you going to be happy with a 290 HP N/A 305? If not, then you just threw away a lot of money into that 305. I'd personally wait until you can spend the money on a 350. I'm not knocking 305s at all, christ I have one, but I'm also building a 350 next summer. If you're determined to make the 305 fast, it can be done. Look at ******* car. But if you want to go faster for cheaper, just build yourself a 350 or get a low mileage shortblock from the junkyard and mod it.

Jason is right. Dollar for dollar, you get more bang for the buck on a 350. That's primarily because every mod you can spend your money on for a 305 can be spent on a 350.
Personally, I get the most gratification knowing my 305 is faster than most 350's (and larger). For the record, I have never lost at the local 1/4-mile track to a Mustang (any generation), any 4th gen Z28 (including one SS) and any Corvette (C4 and C5). Of course, these would be all street-driven cars -- no trailered fire-breathing dragons. Guys at the track are amazed at my results (some don't believe I have a 305). So unless you're like me, go with a 350.
