Need help with head selection
I am having trouble deciding on what type of head to get.
I am currentlly favoring the Worlds Sportsman II but since this is my first attempt at building an engine I want to do it right.
I am building a 383 which is currently in the shop.
I have order just about everything I need so here we go.
Holley 650 Double pumper
Edelbrock RPM performer intake manifold
Comp Cam / 230/236 @50 / .490 lift / 108 seperation
Hedman shortys
Summitt HEI Dist(money issue)
Speedpro Powerforged piston(10.76 @ 64 or 9.88 @ 72)
The 86 will be a strip/street car. My main goal is to get as much torque possible with a limited budget. I would like to get the heads for under a grand.
Your help is greatly appreciated. I hope I included all the necessary information.

I'm only replying because I'm also building a 383 and looking for good heads in that same price range. So far I've found one that will flow 300cfm and are just under $1000 for bare castings.

I will probably get the 220cc head that my friend recommended for me. Look closely at the instructions because you have to run a few offset rocker arms to clear the intake ports.
I saw lots of aluminum heads less than $1000 but none of them flowed 300cfm. I hope this helps out your search

Zippy,
Does fast burn heads = Vortec heads?
I orginally was going to get vortec heads but I didn't want to spend the extra money on self aligning rockers and the other parts necessary when using Vortec. I guess I need to refigure the cost because I think they may come in under the cost of the Sportsman.
Thanks,
Rob

Robert,
You should really pick all of your parts to work together. I have a few questions you need to ask and answer yourself. Who speced out your cam for you? How did you you come to run a "RPM Performer" manifold? Do the manifold and cam match each others profile? Meaning the intended power range and RPM you plan to run. You said you wanted as much torque as possible. What size are the header primaries? You need to pick a head that will complement what you already have. Call comp cams up and ask them what they recommend for a head. Then call Edelbrock and ask them the same question. They are probably going to give you flow specs. You do not want to run mismatched parts. It will just hurt your power, your wallet and make you mad that your car does not run like you wanted it to.-Jeff

jeffsbluez,
Thanks for your input. Comp supplied me the cam specs. I called Comp directly and they recommened the cam that I ordered. Thanks for refreshing my memory, I do need to call them because I was orginally going to use 86 z28 heads but I am working overtime this week and I will have the money to buy better heads. I'll let you know what they say.
Thanks again,
Rob
