Why did this happen?
Why did this happen?
Hello all...I recently heard a knocking sound from my engine bay. I let the car sit and did not run it for quite some time due to me not having the time to tinker with it. I finally got around to pulling it apart yesterday down to the short block. Upon inspecting the parts after the teardown I noticed that my pushrods were caving in on the head side. There were pieces of the metal form the ball part clogging them. I do not know why this happened. I drained the oil and ran a magnet through the oil looking for bearing material but saw nothing. I am just perplexed. I had low oil pressure before the knock happened so maybe the clogged pushrods were to blame for that. Who knows. Well this is my combo...350 2 bolt main bored .030 over. 10:1 flat top hyper pistons, stock crank and reconditioned rods, melling high volume/high pressure oil pump, comp cams XE268, comp cams hydraulic lifters, stock pushrods, S/R Torquer heads, comp cams roller tip rockers, performer RPM air gap intake, holley 650 DP, Accel HEI Distributer, flow tech shorties, 3" exhaust. Now for your information my oil pressure would be wonderful with 20W50 when the car first started up, but after about 15 minutes of driving when it was warm (200 or so) it would get down to about 18-20 psi at idle. Now I dunno about you but that seems low for that thick of oil. Any thoughts on the matter? Why would they collapse like that. They did not bend at all, just the tips caved in and seemed like they just got beat with a hammer from the rocker arms. I do not get it. Thanks a lot guys. I am rebuilding the engine but would like to fix the problem so it does not happen again.
