Ok to change cam with 96k miles

Is it ok to change my cam with 96k miles on the engine. Its pretty tight now, so I want to wait till it dies before I do a rebuild. So is it ok to change, or do I have to worry about changing the bearings too? I will be using new lifter though.

It should be OK, as long as the engine as a whole is in good shape. A compression test would be a good idea. Look for all cylinders to have the same, within 10 psi or so; I'd expect to see about 190 if it's an auto and 170 if it's a stick. With that many miles you definitely should change the valve springs, and get some better rockers (Comp steel roller-tips, like 1416s); they make a whole lot of difference since they don't bend and waste a bunch of the cam's lift. You probably don't need the 1416 which is 1.6, the 1.52 would be OK, I can't recall the part # off the top of my head though.

Thank you.

I guess my biggest worry is the bearings. If they would wear out even faster because of new cam, old bearings. But I agree, I would definately have to change the springs, especially since I will be using a higher lift cam.
