odd backfire
((banging head against wall)) I have a strange backfiring coming from the engine at higher revs any idea on what it might be??? It only started after I changed the oil and if i floor it...The only thing I noticed is that the Ac delco oil filter I pulled off way way bigger than the fram I put on..I checked it at autozone and they said it was the right one...but could this be the problem--PH30

PH30 is a short filter, should have no effect on your problem, just filtering capabilities.
Backfiring from the exhaust? Or through the intake?

It started after the oil change; and didn't do it before? Now that's wierd. All I can think of is something must have been bumped or something and the fact that it happened with the change is coincidental. I had a backfiring prob from my 84 quadrajet, and it was running way too rich, the choke was stuck on

Im fairly new to the world of carbs...but if this helps any when you turn the ignition on theres a continous ticking noise inside of the carb...?and the backfiring is coming from in there too I think...

fine before you touched it?
Odds are prolly 100 to 1 you knocked something loose or messed up a connection on your way in out.
Cars do just "quit" by themselves, but I would figger that you knocked something loose.
Isn't a backfire through the carb either one of two things usualy? lean, or bad timing?
Could it be that you moved/manipulated some spark plug wires on the way by? How old are they, and could they use a replacing anywas? If it's at high rpm, it could just be that they are close enopugh to the frame to arc only when there's lotf of spark in there.
Look under the hood at night, make the symptoms you described happen. Look for arcs, moving wires, disconnection in the dark, sometimes very revealing.
My suggestion..if the wires are old change them all.
Suspect connections
Plug wires
Distributor wires
Coil wires (not just big ones but other small wire connections too)
My guess.. jess a guess is that if you go through the ignition system from start to finish checking every connection you'll probably find your problem..
Just guessing here, and wishing you good luck

Im gonna sound real stupid here but I think I have found out what the noise was and, quite honestly, it makes no sense. I did what aaron said and checked it at night (thank *** for hood lights) and it turns out that at high rpms, the fan rubs the fan shroud hard...any ideas, loose fan? The carb still has a ticking noise when you turn the ignition on, I would like to figger out what that is, lol!

Wiggle the fan, if not loose, then bet the shroud is
re: the carb clicking, only thing comes to mind is something amiss with the MC Dwell...I'm not hip on the CC carbs, maybe a search on the carb board or a question there, would get ya fixed up.

Just a quesion, don't know if this board is dead or not, but the ticking is the computer controlled mixture control solenoid on the carb itself, isn't it? I used to have one before I disabled all my emissions and went with an older style Q-jet. Just my $.02
