It's been so long since I've worked with a thirdgen. After all that time building up the GT and smashing it into a wall, thought I'd revisit my past.
I've got a nice little 350 IROC-Z TPI of course, 87 going to beef her up a little bit with some bolt on's

(Kit Includes Vortec cylinder heads #SD8060A, head gaskets, head bolts, rocker arms, SDPC TPI Vortec Intake Manifold #12498060, intake gaskets and 12 point intake bolts
Pushrods
Lifters
Cam
Port & Polished Intake & Plenum
Am I forgetting something in my vavle train? I haven't selected all the part manufactorers, but I'm trying to think of all the parts I'll need.
And I can't recall. And I don't own a single book

Engine: A slow one & a fast one
Transmission: A bad one & a good one
Axle/Gears: A weak one & a chained one
That kit INCLUDES the intake manifold too? That's a pretty good deal...
Might want to get a new timing chain while you're in that general area.
I know this isn't the valvetrain, but, don't forget about the fuel delivery too. I'd pick up some bigger injectors and a higher gallon/hr fuel pump, with an AFPR, to tune that baby. And of course you'll need to swap the MAF for one compatible with the larger injectors.
Might want to get a new timing chain while you're in that general area.

Those little things totally slipped my mind, I would have ordered these tonight and been F*&*#^$ come next weekend.

I'll add injectors, timing chain and the AFPR to the list.
