winding up to only 3000 rpm
winding up to only 3000 rpm
i have a 86 iroc-z 305tpi auto that has a new motor with 7500 miles, i just noticed that when floored it will get to 3000rpm and wont pull all the way through 5000rpm. the car would pull up throught their before i dunno why it wont now, i tried revving it in nuetral and it still will only go to like 3000 rpm.
i checked the throttle linkage to make sure it was opening all the way. it is i believe.

what happens then? the motor dies? or just wont rev anymore or what? try revving it via the throttle linkage.. can see if it is blocked by something

Is it like that only after warming up? Does the exhaust sound weird, like air blowing? It could be a plugged cat. or some othe exhaust restriction. I've had this happen to me before! If the throttle check doesn't turn up anything, this may be something to look at!

IT JUST WONT REV ANYMORE, i tried revving it via the throttle linkage and it still wouldnt rev anymore, if i shut the windows, the inside smells of gas, so maybe the catalyst is plugged, man you guys are good.
but keep postin other ideas in case it aint that

When you say it doesn't rev, what does that mean?
Does the car stall?
Does the RPM stay constant?
Does it laugh at you?

It may be possible there is an ignition problem as well. If the timing is not advancing, or ignition is breaking up fuel will not burn correctly causing the smell of un-burnt fuel. Are you storing codes?

I had thought of the timing also, but wanted to hear more details first. Since you engine is fairly new, it could be possible that the distributor came loose and the timing has retarded. May want to check it out!
When my converter went a few years ago, it left me stranded. By the time I got it towed to my dad's, it had cooled off and ran fine again long enough for me to get it a few miles to home. To test it, I warmed it up to where it was running bad, then hacked it up and put a hole in the front of the pipe attached to the converter (after the joint) and drove it. I made the hole small enough that it could be welded up if that wasn't the problem.
