Well, If you do keep your 305, you diffently need some heads. Using my Desk Top Dyno 2000, A 305 with small tube headers, a good cam (I used my Comp H210), dual plane intake, 600 cfm carb, and World Products 305 torquer heads, this combo made 330hp @ 5800 rpm's.

I'm in the same boat man. i have corvette L98 heads and a comp cam that i was going to put on my 305 (roughly 300 hp), but now i am going to get a 350 and bolt them on. i hope to pull around 350-360 hp out of the 350 with a few other mods.
Both are good choices, it just depends on when you plan to stop going faster, but in most of our cases is never. eventually the 305 will fall short of the 350. so i would go with the engine that will support your lead-foot in the future.

87 IROC-Z DRIVETRAIN
305 TPI, 700R4, 3.73s
ported plenum, performance resource chip, edelbrock TES Headers and cat-back, K&Ns, AFPR, rest is stock.
15.0 @ 92.5 (bald tires)

Well, you gotta ask yourself how much HP you want, and how much it'll cost to get there. I bet you 90% on this board will hardly use 300 ponies, although 500 is a nice number too. tee hee. So, pretend you settle on 300.
How many miles on the 305? If there's under 100,000 miles a top-end overhaul might do it. However, as someone posted that 300+ hp setup, it's gotta hit 5800RPM. That might be stressing a tired 305 bottom end.
If you are going to pull the motor, there is no point to putting it back in, as putting in a 350 is just as much effort.
I WAS going to throw in a 350, but I realized that I don't NEED it, I would rather do other things with my money, as I already have a decent cam in there, and the rebuild only has 60,000KM. So, I am going to go with the world torquer heads, electric fans and other little whatnots.
If you are planning on pushing 300 horse, then dump the 305 now and buy 350-specific parts.
Good luck, it's money well wasted.
