87 LB9 Auto with a funny idle and stalling problems.
I just got my new car (87 LB9 IROC) and after 400 mile drive home on the freeway I've noticed that the idle can change when your around town. It can be anywhere from 600rpm to 1100rpm?!? Sometimes it even stalls on me if I'm sitting at the lights or reversing.
Anyone got any ideas? It's TPI if thats any help.
Also, I had it running low on gas and was thinking that it might have sucked dirt in, what do you think and any ideas how I can fix it as it's REALLY annoying me. Engine temp also hangs about 190 in town.
Thanks for the help guys.

HEY MAN, i totally get what u mean, i ahve an 86 Lb9 auto car, does the same exact thing. i find myself revvin it up at lights in park to keep it "lit." thebest thing that u can do is see if its holding any codes, or if yer wealthy, take it to somewhere that has computer diagnostic parts, in my case i took it to school and used the tech teachers computer. bc if its holdlin codes, it might be just a simple sensor, or relay, or bad ground somewhere.

Have you tried fuel injector cleaner? I was thinking about trying that to see if it makes a difference. I don't se it doing any harm anyway. Also, has your car always done it?

None yet as I just got it
Tell me what to do to it and I'll do it though.

Tell me what to do to it and I'll do it though. RMK,
1. Injector cleaner probably won't hurt, as long as it isn't methanol-based.
2. Injector cleaner probably won't help if the injectors are already varnished to the point where you are noticing a difference in idle quality.
3. Unless you are getting a rough idle, the injectors are probably not the cause of you "wandering" idle.
Idle speed is controlled by the IAC stepper motor and is dependent upon several inputs to the ECM. Coolant temperature and TPS voltage are important. The PCV system and all vacuum lines need to be intact. The EGR valve should be sealing when closed instead of leaking through. The IAC stepper and its air passages need to be clean. A clean throttle body certainly can't hurt.
If you check the Tech Articles section on this site, you should find some hints.
