stumped - TPS, CAT, EGR????
stumped - TPS, CAT, EGR????
Hi all,
Any help, would be a help. I've got a newly aquired a stock '84 Z28 w/a carb'd 305 and AT in Calif.
stalls at lights if you sit there too long then you have to floor it to restart, blow smoke everywhere. No WOT, sputters and shakes like it's choking on gas. Exhaust pipe is black an I'm sure the plugs are too. No engine codes set. I'm gonna start the tune up today but I figured I'd get it all at once. I think the TPS may be bad or possibly the CAT is going just from the performance end of things, but not sure and in California you don't want to go replacing sensors you don't need to, they've got this market wired and it'll end up being cheaper to buy another car. Where should I start? Where would you start?

Imark,
Welcome aboard!
If it were my car, I'd start right at the carburetor. Your symptoms are definitely indicating a rich condition. You'll have to remove the top and check the float, inlet needle and seat, and set the float level at a minimum. As long as the top is off, you should check the TPS operation and make sure the mixture control solenoid is operating. You might want to remove the carb to check the power valve on the underside. If this valve is stuck open, your mixture will be rich under all conditions.
You'll never pass the smog sniffer until you repair the carb problems, and it isn't that difficult, just time-consuming.
A rebuild kit with all the necessary gaskets and wear parts should cost you about $40.00, and should have a decent pictorial of the carb in exploded form. A rebuilt E4ME will probably cost about $450.00, so you make the choice. In either case you'll have to set the TPS and mixture control solenoid, so a rebuilt isn't just a "bolt-on" fix for the problem.

Just wanted to tell Vader thanks. You hit the nail right on the head with the carb rebuild. Tore it apart yesterday, rebuilt top and bottom, and now $15.00 later - I'm out lookin for Fords to kill. Thanks again.
