700 r4

Can anyone tell me if a 700r4 from a v6 will bolt up to a 400 sbc?I have a v8 700r4 mated to my motor right now and could get this v6 one cheap as a backup. Was also wondering if the v6 tranny is weaker than the v8 overdrive?

A 4.3l V6 700R4 will bolt up to a SBC.

A 2.8/3.1/3.4l 700R4 will not bolt up.

I have a SBC 400 and the 305 700R4 bolted up fine. Why wont the 2.8, 3.1, and 3.4 bolt up? Could he just get another flexplate and torque converter?

Youre looking at different bolt patterns for the 60* V6s (2.8, 3.1, 3.4). Also, there was a rumor about different spline count also.

FWIW, there was also a post that said the 60* trannies used a Buick, Olds, Pontiac bolt style, which would mean they would bolt up to any of those engines. Go figure.

Having seen my own (on my garage floor) and a v8's 700r4 (in a junkyard storage trailer), I can tell ya that the v8 unit is also larger than the v6 trans.

The internals are a shade different, too. The v6 used a thin sprag & spacer, while the v8 used a thick sprag. The clutches also changed a bit for the v8. The majority of the two trannies is the same... that's why sometimes a rebuilder just puts a v8 700r4 rebuild kit into a v6 700r4.

doh! tom beat me to the punch again.. but he is exactally right, not only it wont bolt up, but provided you mangaged to make them mate, the 60* tranny wouldnt handle the power unless maybe it were a HD rebuild..

Thanks for the info guys,My orig. 700 r4 bolted right up to the 400 but I am thinking for some reason it is not going to last,so that is why I was wonderin about getting a v6 700 r4 and building it more beefier while I still drive my car, guess not though.I have got a line on a v8 700 r4 now, just waiting for it to get nice out cause the dude that is selling it doesnt have a garage, and it is still in the car,Frig winter sucks...
