Stumped: starting trouble

It only happens a few times a month when I start my car(hot or cold, doesn't matter) and it has been giving me these problems every since I have bought my car 1 1/2 years ago. when starting it the engine rolls over and either dies immediatly or idles very low and jumps erratically from like around 500 - 900 rpm and if I step on the gas it will die every time. From this point it will either die or after a minute or two you will see the rpm's jump up to 1700 and then back down to my normal idling speed and then it will be fine. It seems to have this problem more often when I run low octane gas. Putting fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank temporarily solves the problem until it has been burned out. I have changed my EGR valve and MAF sensor but it didnt help. Nobody I have talked to has helped me figure it out. PLEASE anybody who has had an experience like this or knows something about it let me know or any tips will be helpful... thanks

I wish I could help! Mine does the exact same thing. And mine has started to do something similar periodically while driving! I'll just be going along and suddenly the rpms freeze right around 500 and the car coasts and won't respond to the gas for about 5-10 secs. Then it resumes normal operation...maybe our cars are just possessed??

I had the same prb, ok so you get in your car and crank it up, it would start then die, even hitting the gas it would still do it, and let me guess no codes would come up. You said you replaced the MAF and its still doing it. Check your MAF relay, Now people say Relays are either Bad or Good no in between but I beg to differ. I went to dealer and they didn't even have a clue. 500 dollars later I changed out the relay and not a problem since. On my 89 L98 it was the second relay on drivers side. If that doesn't do it I believe the first one is also a MAF ones the In air and the Other Is the Out Air, I think. Well anyway Check it out and let me know.
