check your shifter cable to the trans and make sure it's adjusted right. recheck the tv cable. other than that i'm out of ideas.

Sure, it could be broken or disconnected inside the tranny. When I bought my t/a with the 82, the thing wouldn't downshift. turns out the little wire that hooks onto the tranny end of the TV cable had broken off. There was enough slack to bend a new hook on the wire. Not an easy job because of the limited space to work in, but probably easier then puling off the pan to replace the little wire.

A busted TV cable won't let you manually grab first? I didn't think the TV would affect that...?

Hey guys this post caught my attention because I am having a very similar prob. I cannot get a 1st gear by shifting manually, works fine during auto shifts and true adjusting TV cable does not effect this but I know the TV cable is working cause I can feel it shift differently when I change adjustment so I am also interested in hearing any possible causes or fixes

well, i got the tv cable adjusted perfectly but still wont go into 1 manually because this is on a different adjustment cable and i know nothing of how to adjust it. but i am down for a while now anyway. the damn tf g2 heads i put on the car got recalled! i knew something was bad wrong with these heads when the one would not hold proper torque on the rocker studs and i had to send it back. well they sent a new one and it turns out the other one i didnt send back which torqued down fine is now ****ed due to a rocker stud pulling out! this is not even the problem these heads had to warrant a recall? it was sopposed to be a bad cut on the valvejob. i had not even revved the car past 4000 yet either due to break in and all. too bad.

If I could guess at the problem grabbing 1st, I'd say something's hanging up the shifter cable.
You can go under the car and unhook the shift cable from the shift lever (on the trans). If you then rotate the shift lever "back" all the way (car off, parking brake on, block wheels), and then put the shifter in first, you could check to see if the cable meets the shift lever exactly.
Ultimately the tranny's shift lever will tell you where first is. If the shift cable from the shifter can't match the tranny shift lever hole, then something's wrong with the cable/shifter... at least that's my guess!

ill second checking the shifter cable, and assembly.. including getting under the car and having someone work the shifter from inside, making sure it clicks into and out of every position.. chances are good the cable just isnt moving the selector on the side of the tranny far enough to engage first.. or even before doing this to try saving some time, try pulling it back into first using a little bit of force (not too much), that may be enough to get it to engage.. mine grand am does the same thing, just too lazy to adjust the linkage..
