What is a ZZ3 comparable cam?

I'm looking for a cam, and with the help of desktop dyno, have decided that the zz3 makes the most power with my application. however, i need a hydraulic cam, not roller.

anything out there with the same specs?

You could get a cam with the same lift and duration as the zz3 cam in a flat tappet model, but it will not make the same power because of the ramp shapes on flat tappet cams compared to roller cams. The roller cam has steeper ramps, so it gets the valve open quicker thus has more area under lift than a comparable flat tappet cam. Why do you not want a roller cam?

it's not that i don't want a roller cam, it's that i don't have a roller block.

ok. It depends on what you are trying to do, exactly. I would call the cam companies ie, Comp Cams, Crane Cams, and tell them your combination and what your expectations are. They will give you the right cam for your combination and, hopefully, one that you will be happy with. After all, they do this stuff for a living and they provide dedicated tech lines for this stuff. Another option is finding a engine builder or two and asking his advice. They will often times have a engine in their own truck, car, or whatever or a customer that you may be able to sample or catch a lift in. Sorry there is no simple answer to this question.

Let's be clear, too, that the ZZ3 is a hydraulic cam. It just happens to be designed for roller lifters that automatically adjust lash hydraulically.

I'm sure what you meant is that you're looking for a cam that uses flat-tappet hydraulic lifters.

I was in a similar situation. I had a factory roller block on the stand and a ZZ3 cam - heads & exhaust were going on at the same time, and the '86 LG4 long-block was coming out. My rationale was that the ZZ4 engine was used in the HO 350 conversion package (ZZ3 & ZZ4 cams are identical), based on the LG4/L69 CC carb, so I should be able to make it work & pass emissions in a 305 w/LG4 computer. Well, not sure how sound that reasoning was, but when I started to put the two together, I discovered the roller block had cracks in the lifter valley. So, I scrambled looking for something that would work in my non-roller block. I picked the Crane CompuCam because it came the closest to the ZZ4 cam specs, and was called "computer compatible".

We'll find out soon if my "emissions" reasoning pans out. No complaints about how it runs.
