Dieseling during acceleration

hey guys,

i've got an 84 Z w/ a 305 HO with about 170k miles. i've just recently started having problems with a strange dieseling sound coming around at higher rpms. it's tough to describe the sound, but it only happens up above 3000 rpms. there is a deffinate loss of power when this occurs. could this just be knocking? i've never really heard what a knock sounds like. it also seems that this problem occurs more in the morning when the engine is below 120 degrees. although it's a bit better when the engine is warmed it's still present in the upper rpms. it's also more evident in lower gears (1 & 2) are worst. that's probably due to engine working harder than in 4/5th

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

Have somebody drive it that can diagnose your problem.Dieseling is when an engine continues to run without spark(after it's turned off). 4/5 puts more load on the engine than 1/2 at the same throttle position.
Just a guess would be that it's pinging. Bad gas, incorrect timing, carbon deposits are some of the causes of this.

ya, i guess dieseling was a bad choice of words. it just sounds like a diesel would during acceleration. that's just the best description i could think of for the sound since i can't make any of the goofy noises everyone loves so much.

It's not pinging? Try running better gas and maybe retarding the timing back a little. I know on my '80 Camaro the HEI sometimes vibrates too much and advances a hair too much and it pings every few months.
