valve lash
This is the deal, I put some new heads on my car, these 383 fast burn heads and I am going to put some new aluminum roller rockers on them instead of the oem stamped rockers. Well I didn't have the right valve covers so I had to put the stamped rockers back on for now so that my car would run. Well when I set the valve lash I ran into a problem, the rockers would be loose everytime I would set them. At the time I didn't realize that the lifters were bleeding out the oil in them
. I guess that by preloading the lifters as the book says then they bleed out. I am having this knocking noise now. Pretty sure its the valves though. It is intermittent and only happens when the engine is idling, when the rpms are up, like above 1800 the noise stops. Mainly I just need to know how to set up the valve lash for these roller rockers, sorry about the long story but maybe it'll help. Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. I am still waiting for the tall valve covers to get here, but I will do it like you said with doing it with the engine running. Only problem that I can see is that oil will get everywhere right? Oh well I have to get this thing running. Thanks for the help

Not a whole lot of oil, might splash a bit here and there plus run down the sides. Still isn't as much as you think it would be.

They sell oil splash guards at advance. Basically they are clips that clip onto the rocker and plug the push rod hole. Oil still comes from the hole but it just runs down the rocker. I used these and didnt get any oil anywhere.

if you are really worried about spiling oil on the exhaust, get some cheapie used valve covers, and cut just the top part off so that only the sides remain
slit some windshield washing tubing lengthwise, and stick it on the now sharp edge around the valve cover top...
you now have a valve cover that will hold the oil in, and let you set the lash with it running.
