Ah!!!! Wiring Harness Frustration

Ok, here's the deal. I have an 84 Camaro with a 305 LG4 Carb. motor. I am putting in a 350 TPI motor from an 89 Trans Am GTA. I have the computer and the wiring harness for it. I also have a motor/computer/wiring harness from an 85 305 TPI IROC Camaro. The GTA was wrecked, so I pulled the motor out. That wiring harness was smashed in some parts. My question is, can I use the 305 Camaro harness with the 350 Trans Am computer? I thought the GTA computers were different because of the headlights. Or, would you guys just get a new harness anyways? Would I get one for a Trans Am or a Camaro. ANY help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I did a similar swap on my '82 Z28, bought a totalled '88 GTA and cannibalized it. I used the '88 harness, repinning my '82 chassis harness as necessary to accomodate it.

I bought Helms books for both platforms, studied the wiring diagrams carefully, and built conversion charts for the two key connectors (C100 on driver side firewall, C207 pax side under dash near ECM).

You have options if you don't want to go thru all this trouble. Several companies can rework your '89 harness to work w/ the '84 chassis harness; TPIS, Howell, and FIS come to mind.

I'd stick with the 89 harness. 87 and older ones used different relays, so the plug ins are different. They changed to the newer style relays in 88. Also, the 89 TPI setup doesn't use a cold start injector and wiring. 88 was the last year with the cold start injector. The headlights have nothing to do with the engine harness or computer. These two harnesses separate from each other at the junction block on the firewall. T/A and Camaro engine harnesses should be the same. The biggest question I would have is if the underdash harness in your 84 will work with the TPI stuff. That's the one question I'd be contacting someone like Howell industries about. I know an 86 or newer Camaro underdash harness will work. I'm not sure about 85 because it used a different ecm than 86-92.I got my engine harness off a wrecked car as well. It wasn't that hard to repair it. I found all the plugs that were broken on my harness on other fuel injected cars at the junkyard and just spliced them in. Hopefully I helped you some and didn't confuse you even more! Lol.
