Where is the #1 one cylinder??

I am fairly confident that for my year ('87) that the number one cylinder is drivers side forwardmost. Is this correct??

Actually that can be a trick question. The proper answer is "The cylinder that is the closest to the front". If you look at a chev engine the first cylinder on the left bank (drivers side) is actually ahead of the first cylinder on the right bank. This is because of how the con rods are mounted on the crank. All engines are classified that way.

The reason it's a trick question is because ford engines have the number one cylinder on the right hand bank. But then they also number their cylinders differently to. 1,2,3,4 is on the right and 5,6,7,8 is on the left.

What do you expect from a company that puts the distributor at the wrong end of the engine too?
