if the ignition module is on the blink...how does this present itself? lack of high end power? lack of revs? hard starting? i get all this and have replaced rotor, plugs, wires.....is it the module? thanks guys

 

lack of engine running what exactily is your problem or symptoms

 

ignition modules can pose a number of symptoms and problems. I've also run into numerous problems with aftermarket modules. I recommend getting a factory module if you do replace it.

 

Agreed, the factory AC Delco ignition module is the best available. All the others are junk and tend to fail early when you least expect it.

 

do you get any error codes?

 

I've had the Accel 7-pin in mine for 2 years. The factory module wouldn't support the RPMs.

 

i agree, the factory one is superior to a standard replacement type, but an accel or msd is a better module tha stock. ede is for the most part correct, although occasionally other problems can present themself, usually it just doesn't run.

 

thanks for the input you guys! so the ac/delco is the best? i've got a hypertech coil and cap with accel wires....the car IS 20 years old and i think the module is original....i guess i'll replace it anyway and see what happens.

 

Forgot to mention that about 3 years ago, my nephew's '86 Berlinetta LG4 started acting up, hard to start, got poor mileage, and finally stranded him in northern New Mexico (heading back to NMS from visiting his parents in Iowa) when the original coil & module gave up on him. It was repaired at a local dealer, and he said after that it ran better than it ever had, got better mileage than it ever had, in the 2 years he'd had it. Had about 130k on it at the time.

 

thanks five7kid ofr that!....sounds like my car now....i'll replace those items.....having trouble getting the revs up on this car..seems like it hits a wall around 3500rpm.

 

I bought a wells replacement from Autozone. It was only like $30 and has been doing it's job well. I had some electrical issues that kept frying them, but a lifetime warranty covered that.

I was using an Accel unit for a while, but that lasted about one drive. There was no power, studdering, and horrible fuel mileage. Upon testing it, I saw it was bad. I still have to send it back to Summit as a matter of fact!

I'll have to check on the warranty, but I can just send mine back to Summit telling them it was defective. I can tell you for certain that I'm not going to buy accel again. I'm on my first MSD coil after going through 2 Accel coils in 4 months.

 

Where is the ignition module located? Is this the same thing as the ESC (Electronic Spark Control Module)? Autozone has the ESC listed at $56.99. They have a Wells control module for $24.99, but it doesnt list a description. It just says control module...Thanks all!

 

yea, the 7 pin module is referred to as the ESC.

 

So, if I'm not getting spark nor fuel, I have to replace the 7 pin ESC module or the ignition module in the distributor?

 

If you're not getting fuel, there's another issue you need to find. The ESC controls ONLY the spark. Try to use the KISS principle and look at your fuel pump relay first. If that's not it, I think you may be looking at a replacement fuel pump.
