That sounds like great, practical idea. For all I know they already have magnets, but I don't think so .

These guys have had them for several decades http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/...&storeId=10101

It'll tend to hold the finer ferrous wear metals that the filter media won't trap. Since most pleated paper elements are rated to about 60 microns (25.4 microns/.001"), it's not too bad of an idea.

Two alternatives are: 1) use a filter rated to less than your engine clearances; or 2) reduce the wear by using a better lubricant.

i think it's mostly something the sales people came up with to increase sales. lot of the dirt inside an engine isn't magnetic. i'd second the idea of using good oil, good filter, and proper oil change intervals i do glue magnets in the lifter valley to catch broken valve train pieces and glue screeen in the drain back holes to keep stuff from falling to the oil pan

If you or your engine could tell any difference between 5W-30 and 10W-30, I'd be more than a little surprised.

I use 5W-30 in the Camaro, and 15W-40 in the '57 (for its enhanced anti-corrosion properties).

I don't use the magnets, though.
