If the MAF is bad, the car will idle smoother when its unplugged.

If the fuel pump is bad, the car wont run, because its not getting any fuel!

Try hitting it! No joke! Ok, actually a quick way to check the MAF is to tap on it while the car is idling and see if the car stumbles. It's inside that big air boot-thing, so try giving the boot a few good smacks. As for the fuel pressure, a high pressure gage is the best way to check it. A car can still run with a bad fuel pump. A lot of times the fuel pump will will be "sick" instead of "dead".

Nell,

Get your hands on a DMM with very slender probes. Test the voltage output of the MAF at idle (about 800-850 RPM). The output should be about like this:

A MAF on a 350CID engine should indicate about 800 mV at the same idle speeds, and about 1.80-2.10 VDC at 3,000 RPM in neutrl/Park.

Mine threw code 33 when the MAF went out.
