How did you hook it up. Did you have to buy a special TPI base or carb'd manifold. What about headers? Also, what years came with these heads?

What I understand of the 'Vette heads is that they accomplish an EGR system with an external tube, much like the LT1/LT4 family of engines.

All the above engines are emissions legal in their respective cars, so I wouldn't think it would be beyond the realm of possibility to meet standards with a retrofit.

If you are really serious about the conversion, you could use the external exhaust tube of custom plumbing from the exhaust to the EGR valve. All that would be required would be to drill/tap a hole for a fitting on the exhaust crossover of the intake to supply exhaust gas to the valve. Stainless steel tubing about 3/8" O.D. and a tube bender would make a pretty clean custom installation.

I know the aluminum heads were available after 1989, but I'm not sure about before then.

First year was 86, on Corvette convertibles only. In 87 it was on the coupes as well. As for being 'legal' you would need to run exhaust to the EGR like Vader said, or pick up an aftermarket or Vette base which has the exhaust inlet for the EGR near the distributor. If you only have a sniffer check and they dont go under the hood to check the function, it is entirely possible to pass without the EGR, as I have done just that.

I live in Phoenix, AZ. Next worst thing to California's standards. I have visual, sniffer (idle and run speed), and they even check the gas tank and cap to insure its sealed.
I can probable get away with the visual though, they would never see the difference. Do you think I could still pass the sniffer without the EGR though?

It should pass the pipe test.

We do functional in CA so it would fail that part but if you don't have that part of the test you should be alright.

A good running car will pass without EGR.

I passed without it in CA. In San Diego, NO ONE does the functional test.

The engine I'm building uses the Corvette heads with a tube off the #8 cylinder to the EGR port on the back of my TPIS Big Mouth intake manifold. I dont have pics of it yet, but it'll be installed next month. I copied the setup off a Corvette. You need to modify your exhaust manifolds or headers (I'm using SLP 1 3/4" headers) because the #8 tube doesnt have an AIR tube connected to it. It'll be the setup like Vader described.

R.O.B.,

Check out "How About These Heads on My 305" on the TPI board. I give you all the information you'll need. I have Corvette aluminum heads on my 305 and I live in Tucson.

G.M. part #10185077 is an emission-legal ZZ4 conversion kit for '82-'87 camaro. The GMPP catalog gives all the part numbers for the parts in the kit and might give you some ideas for your application. It is for carburated cars but the heads are still the corvette aluminum pieces.
