What do you all think of the Pete Jackson gear?
I am thinking of putting a Pete Jackson whining gear in my car to add a little demeanor to her. Does it whine really loud at idle? Is it annoying? I have a double roller now, but was bored and thought I would do a few enhancements.
Let me know....

Doesn't a gear drive throw the knock sensor into fits? Or is the L98 missing that unit?

I'm getting tired of typing the same thing over and over. We definitely need this topic covered on a FAQ.
First, the only gear drive that's available for a roller cam (1987 and newer) is the PJ "quiet" gear drive. It is not loud, only discernable if you're listening for it. I know because I've used it for almost three years.
Secondly, this particular gear drive does NOT affect the knock sensor. This is verified by my Auto Xray.

Sorry Willie, but your info did help me so don't feel bad about having to post it again. Just as long as your information helps, I think thats all that would matter.
Thanks again!! No PJ gear for me!

this is from the 'Q: and A:' section in a recent Summit magazine.
Q: I have a 1940 Ford with a GM ZZ3 crate engine (the 350 H.O.). I want to install a Weiand Pro-Street supercharger and a "noisy" gear drive. The problem I am running into concerns the gear drive. Most of the noisy types will not work with a roller camshaft, which my engine has. I don't want to switch to a non-roller cam. Is there an aftermarket roller cam I can use?
A: Using a gera drive with the roller cam in your ZZ3 engine will not be a problem. The reason makers of noisy gear drives say they won't work with a roller is due to the computer that most cars with factory roller cam engines have. The computer picks up the sound and interprets it as detonation, then proceeds to retard the timing. The gear drive I suggest you use is from Pete Jackson, part number PJJ-35091C. While it is not a "noisy" unit per se, it is loud enough that you will be able to hear it.

Not that you wrote it, but...
HAH! I guess thats why both Willie and I have verified with a scanner that no knock retard is going on.... Must be our imagination.
I have a pretty good idea what IS going on, and it has nothing to do with spinning gears, but rather ****-poor installation of said gears. There is a clearance spec from the TC cover to the idler, and its tight I might add. I'll bet many people havent checked, and that floating idler is smacking the block, which WILL cause false knock. Harmonics my a$$....
Oh, and I have to disagree with Willie in saying its not that noticeable, mine is very much so. Maybe I need to drown it out with a supercharger

There's really nothing to disagree with me, you have not heard my car. I'm stating that on my car, you can barely hear it when I don't have the supercharger on. This is the PJ "quiet" gear drive. For some reason, yours must be louder... or I'm going deaf in my old age...yeah, that's it!!

Huh? What did you say? I CANT HEAR YOU!.. Oh wait, thats Vader's line...
No, I havent heard yours. Mine is the 'quiet' one as well, but I find that term a bit of a stretch. It is definitely louder than your average Paxton, somewhere between there and a Vortech. Maybe there are some small differences or they changed something that made it noisier/quieter.
I still think I need to drown it out with a supercharger

Kudos Madmax first time anybody actually used common sense about whining causing false knock. Hah! The cover idea is more like it.
