Intake gasket, bad?

What are the signs of an intake gasket crapping out? Besides oil consumption, are there any other visual signs to look for? Also, what kind of oil consumption are we talking about...is it a constant loss of oil, or does it get worse the longer after an oil change you go? Any info on this matter would help me a great deal..

Could a bad EGR valve cause a vacuum leak bad enough to cause oil consumption?
