Engine types

Can't get much more general engine question than this.

What are the names of the different engines and what do they mean? I see stuff like LS-1 and LG-4 but I have no idea what that designates. All's I know is I have a 305tbi. heh

basically gm give a "name" to each engine combination. the same cubic inch engine may come in several combinations and HP and torque ratings. each name is specific. to add to the confusion there was a lt-1 in the 70s and now a lt1, not the same thing.

Just for your own personal information, you have an L03. Unless you meant Tuned Port Injection 305, in which case you have an LB9. The throttle body injected cars are L03's.

Basically, all of the names or numbers were production orders. Like the diference between Formula and Trans-Am, or RS and Z28. Just to diferentiate between the diferent types of engines.

Here are some common ones: L69 - performance engine for camaros in early eighties, LO3 - throttle body 305, LB9 - TPI 305, L98 - TPI 350, LT1 - 350 for early to mid nineties camaro and corvette and firebird, also LT1 in the 70's, LS1 - 350 for camaro/covette/bird in late nineties to the present, and they just revived the LS6 (a legendary engine from the 1970 Impala) to designate a special available 350 for 2001 vettes. Hope that helps I'm sure there are many more.

Enkil,

If you're curious about all the RPO codes and what they designate, you can search the Tech Articles on this site. RRegular Production Option codes are used in ordering, assembling, and servicing a given vehicle. GM groups most options by common codes. For example, most engine codes begin with the letter 'L', rear axle codes generally begin with 'M', and so on.

If you are interested in a fairly complete listing for most GM passenger cars and light trucks through 1992, I have one to mail, but it's about 60 pages long. Let me know. If your mail server can handle large files, I can send it.

Actually I ROCK. the new LS1 is a 346 not a 350 I small difference, but it still bothers me when people refer to the LS1 as a 350.

O.K. I couldn't have it done half-arsed. The file is now in PDF format at:

RPO Codes.pdf

It is correct as of the publish date as far as I know.

(And yes, as much as GM would like to advertise otherwise, the LS1 os only a little over 345 cubes - a long stroke 305-ish bore engine.)
