I am getting ready to do a ignition tune up, I just bought a Jegs 49,000 Volt Remote HEI Coil, a Jegs HEI Module, and Accel 8mm Spiral Core wires. I am planning on buying an Accel Cap and Rotor very soon, and I was wondering what type of Spark Plugs I should run with this setup.

The engine is basically stock as far as I know. I was planning on buying Split Fire plugs for it, but I was wondering if anyone else had any other suggestions. Are Split Fire plugs worth it? Or is there something better for about the same price?

Also Stock timing is 6*, Is it true that the engine will lag at 6*? (it's currently at about 10-11*, and I think I'm having detonation problems at high RPMs) What should I set the timing to?

 

splitfires are a joke. i would say that most people would agree. IMHO the best plugs for GM engines are AC Delco rapid fires, or any stock AC Delco plug for that matter. be sure you get the proper heat range plugs though. i run AC Delco rapid fires in my dodge and have absolutely no complaints. theyve been in for about 3 years and still look and run great. i would try setting your timing to about 8* btdc if it still detonates try a little less. if it still detonates try premium fuel

I hear good thing about bosch supers. They're about half the price of delcos and seem to be twice the quality.

I stick to delcos myself, i really havnt heard alot of positive things about rapidfires. Everyone seems to agree they work fine, but they cant really tell any difference between the regular delcos.

BUT. Be wary of where you buy your spark plugs!!!

There's actually two brands of delco plugs, a high quality and a low quality brand, each having the same part number. The low quality stuff goes to wal-marts and cheapo places.

i dunno...there isnt an easy answer.

I knew a guy who bought some online from gm direct, but the only sent him 6. He went to autozone and got the other two, but when he compared those two to the 6 he got online, he noticed a huge margin of quality.

I've gone to the autozone around here and got some delco plugs, then went and compared them to the plugs you can get from the parts department at the dealership i work at, and they were the same.

So...i guess the best answer i can give you is to stay away from the cheaper places. Meaning, even the autozones franchises that look kind of ratty. If you want to be 100% sure i guess you'd have to get them from a dealership, or from partsdirect.
