Are the balancing requirements for a 400 w/5.5" rods be different than a 400 w/5.7er's?? Thanks

Simply, yes. When you change the rod length, it changes the rotational mass. Factory 400 cranks are balanced to the shorter rod length, changing the length requires rebalancing if you are looking to get any longevity out of the engine.
