Mechanical AND elecric pumps???

I'm working on a 87 Camaro (305/carb) and I noticed that it has a mechanical pump on it and an electric pump in the tank.

I've never seen both on one car. (stock) Of course I've never looked before either.

Is this normal??

I have heard of such things though I have never actually seen one. It was probably done so the factory didn't have to stock 2 different part #s of gas tanks.

It is called a "lift" pump, and diesels have them also the feed the injection pump. Prior to '87 (so I hear) only L69 motors had them, but in '87 (last year for the carb), all the carbed engines got them. If you pull it out, you will notice that its half the size of a regular pump.

Cool.

The cust. complaint was that they hear this noise that they never heard before after they shut the car off.

I learned something today.

Once in a while I'll hear my fuel pump run for a few seconds after I shut the car off.. maybe it has something to do with oil pressure that's still high enough to run the pump? I know in this cold, my mechanical oil pressure gauge will drop slowly enough to still stay high for a second or two after I shut the car off.
