Timing Q: More base advance or more vacuum advance?

I did the swap and things are starting to run more smoothly as I pinpoint problems. One that I am onto now is I have a pinging when the rpms are low and I am either accelrating more then 1/4 throttle and/or going uphill.

I put in the medium blue springs which should bring on advance somewhat quickly around 2500, which is about where I start getting the ping. So I am assuming that my mechanical advance, along with the base timing around 8 and the stock vacuum canister is adding too much advance too quickly.

So I guess I have two or three options: 1) go back to stiffer srpings, 2) reduce base timing to about 0-4 degrees, or 3) get an adjustible vacuum canister and reduce the amount of vacuum advance.

I am thinking that a hybrid of #'s 2 and 3 are what I really need to do. Any thoughts?

for now put the stiffer springs back....then get the adjustable canister...and put the springs back. I set my vac advance to nothing then slowly worked it up. what kind of dist. do you have? my accel (HEI replacement) is adjustable...you have to out an allen wrench inside the nipple and turn a screw (you cant see it) so i'd check to see if there is any way that yours is adjustable. what i your base timing now? and c/r...what kind of gas? i just run super all the time, it's not that much more...prices are slowly coming down over here in NJ

actually, a quicker and easier fix for now would be to just back the base down, instead of takin the springs ou

The canister requires a 1/16" allen wrench. Back the screw out half a turn at a time until it stops then take out a half turn more.

Lol.
Pretty sweet it shows up as a "related thread" like it was yesterday!
Actually that's lame.
Thanks.
