305 LG4 Timing Advance
305 LG4 Timing Advance
I have heard that advanced timing on my Lg4
will help a little wtih power, about 6-8 degrees. Is this true? How would I go about advancing the timing. I still have the computer hooked up. Please advise.
thanks

Disconnect the four wire connector behind the distributor. Loosen the distributor hold down clamp underneath the cap. Put a timing light on it and turn the distributor until you get a 8 degree reading on the timing tab. Tighten the clamp, reconnect the connector and see if it pings. If it does, back it off a couple degrees. If it doesnt ping you could go higher to 10 degrees. Just find the highest setting w/out noticeable pinging when you have your foot in it

There's no need in even bothering to look at the timing mark; they're never right, and it's irrelevant anyway. You want the engine to run its best, not to have some unreliable indicator match what some book says it should be. Every combination of engine, gasoline, driver, car weight, altitude, ambient temperature, humidity, gear ratio, torque converter, tire size, engine temp, etc. requires different timing. In a fuel injected car the ECM does a half-decent job of taking some of this into account, but the computer-controlled carb is too crude to do even a remotely adequate job of adjusting for all possible conditions.
Advance it a little at a time until it just begines to ping, then back it back off. To advance it all you have to do is loosen the bolt under the ditributor, rotate the whole dist slightly CCW, and tighten the bolt back down.
