Replacing oil pan ... expected problems?
1987 Camaro Z-28 with the L98. The oil pan was beat to crap and welded on by the previous owner. It's leaking in the front and back. How hard is it to replace an oil pan and timing cover without taking the engine out? It looks like it would be difficult to just take out because of the k-member. Overall, how hard is this?
Makes me wish I would have just replaced it when I was rebuilding the engine

You have to lift the engine off the mounts to get the pan out.
Yup, sure would have been a lot easier to do it when the engine was out.

lol, not welded onto the engine. I meant that he had done some spot welding to the oil pan. He must have bottomed out on something, rubbed a hole in it, and patched it with a little bit of welding. It's pretty shoddy.
I was hoping I wasn't going to have to lift the engine
Will I have to unhook the trans as well, or just take off the cross brace on the back of the trans? Would make it hella easier if I didn't have to take the trans off...

whew i was going to say, for anyone to weld it onto the block must be more nuts than a santa clause that touches himself with toys his elves make =[
No, you can leave the tranny hooked, matter of fact u can leave the wires on the starter hooked up too, but u will have to move the starter to get to some of the pan bolts.
most important thing is to watch your distribuator, oil sending unit, any electronics in the back that could get pinched.
You just need the clearance to get the pan from the crossmember.
another thing is u may have to turn the engine over by hand to posistion the crank to allow for the oil pan to slide out..
good luck
