as bort pointed out not only is it safe to turn off the cap lock it's even desireable to do so.

Kamaro,
GM Tech is one of the transmission experts on the board. He probably has visions of clutch packs, bands, servos, and valve bodies in his sleep. What little I know about the Hydramatics is that while they can operate as you describe, the oil pressure is regulated higher when in the ranges other than DRIVE or OD, so that shifts will be firmer and more positive. This might eventually contribute to premature wear of the clutches and planetary sets as they engage at higher pressures and with more force. It would probably take a while to do so, but I think the tendency would be towards more wear.
Any expert opinions on the topic would be appreciated. I've done some valving, adjustment, and servo work, but I haven't rebuilt an automatic since the PowerGlide days. I just keep clean oil in and never have problems.

I might be talking out of my @ss here, but I thought that when you installed a shift kit (increases shift firmness and gives you more positive shifts) it increased the life of your transmission. This more positive shifting results in the clutches "rubbing" for a shorter period of time before engaging and, therefore, they do not wear as fast. I would think that shifting throught the gears may have the same effect. But, as I said before, I really am not sure of any of this, just what makes sense in my head.

all of my tranny knowledge comes from past experiances, most of them bad, namely with the 700r4's.. at one point when i was having one rebuilt i had asked around at different shops about shiftkits, pretty much everyone agreed that they are rougher on your transmission.. they also suggested other ways to get the affects of a shiftkit without the downsides of one..
