Compressor rattle
Alright awhile back I posted about a rattle … well I found it. It is coming from the compressor. When the vent is on the rattle is low but when the A/C is turned on it gets much louder. Possible solutions?
Now to another problem that could be associated. My A/C cycles so often at idle that the car doesn’t have the opportunity to cool. At speed however the A/C works great and gets really cold. I have associated this problem to low cooling agent but in light of the rattle is there something ganked up with the compressor that could be the cause?
Thanks

If the compressor is short-cycling, the refrigerant charge in the system is probably low. If the refrigerant is low, there's a good chance that the oil level in the system is also low. That could explain some of your compressor noise. I'd suggest not using it until you can check the charge, and you might be able to save the compressor. Using it with a low oil charge might destroy the compressor. $$$

To retro fit properly, you have to vacuum the system of old oil. It's not compatible with the 134 freon. The correct amount of oil is added with the 134 freon when you recharge the system. The nice little kit like JC Whitney sells, doesn't tell you that untill you get the box with the instructions. Then, you have to take it to a place to get it vacuumed out. And that's where the big bill comes from, The Labor! not the product. Might just as well take it to a good garage! I've seen alot of guys let the freon out and try to refill it with 134 and oil at the same time. Needless to say, their air cond. no longer works! TOO MUCH OIL!
