I wouldn't think it would be a requirement, but it never hurts. The only reason I could think of would be the extra harmonics introduced by the noise from the gear drive.

Some of the noisy gear drives also affect the timing by creating a false knock signal on cars with a knock sensor. This has been discussed recently, so you kmay want to do a search!

Awaiting results from all 8 ASE tests.

No you dont NEED to have your motor balanced. As a matter of fact the engine will do better with one intalled. Unless your car is computer operated. In that case youll have to figure out a way of disabling the knock sensor on the engine so it wont retard the **** out of your motor. If you do take it out make sure you dont get pinging and use good gas.

Chevrolet in their infinite wisdom used a single idler gear drive on some of the older 427 truck engines. These engines were never balanced and can still be found today powering 70's vintage 2-1/2 ton trucks. You should have no problems using one on an unbalanced engine providerd it's carbed. However, balancing can't hurt and I am a firm believer that it will free up a few extra horsepower.

No, you dont need to balance it, but if the motor is out and apart I would do it anyway. As for the knock sensor, try and find someone who has a problem running a gear drive with a knock sensor... its going to be a difficult task. I dont have any problems with false knock with my 'quiet' gear drive. Willie has one too, and he doesnt have any problems either.
