Is this sensor the same for both TBI/TPI? From the outside, the sensor looks the same.

If you mean the Detonation Sensor (knock sensor), the sensor is tuned for the engine displacement and case design, not the fuel system. If you have a 305, the sensor has a lower threshold of sensitivity because the case casting is thicker and the cylinder walls are farther from the outer case wall than on a 350. If you have a 350, the sensor is less sensitive because of the reverse conditions. Both sensors will have the same appearance, so check the application.

My dad just switched his TBI to SD TPI and he used a different knock sensor.

Thanks fellas. I played it safe and got the knock sensor and ESC. Dropping both in later this week.
