Its probably your TPS Thorttle position sensor. This manages how mouch to open the throttle bores at idle. Buy a code scanner from your local auto parts store they usually will run about $20 and will help you with future problems aswell. Hope this info helps.

Nice little article to into you to code pulling. Have paperclip handy.
For the idle, it could be your IAC, but does this happen all the time? Only when cold? Only when it warms up? Does the idle seem to be searching , or is it constant everytime all the time? Toss out a bit more info and we'll see if anyone can help.

My cavalier is doing about the same thing. If I run on the interstate for a while it starts wanting to die, but it can't while I'm running along.
When I get to the end of the offramp and start slowing down it starts trying to die. I put it in neutral and it keeps running. I have to wait at least 5 seconds or so til I can put it in drive again, if I don't wait a little and just put it in drive it will die.
After I let it set there for a few seconds and run in neutral it will be alright to put in drive and drive on.
I'm not sure what this could be, maybe the IAC valve, I need to check it out.
It doesn't throw any codes either. Maybe I just need to clean out the TBI with carb cleaner.
It's a 90 2.2 TBI cavalier.

Here's another vote for the IAC. I suppose it could also be the TPS, but I'm betting on the IAC. Also make sure there's no carbon in the IAC passage or behind the throttle plates.
