Are TPI Heads and Carb Heads Different
Well let's see... What KIND of heads for WHAT engines are we talking about here ? Carbs only came on LG4s and L69s. TPI only came on LB9s and L98s. Are u talking LG4 heads vs. LB9 ? L69 vs LB9 ? LG4 vs L98 ? What ? LOL

Sorry for the poor wording. What I mean, is, can you take heads that come off a carbureted engine and use them on a TPI engine? Or is the bolt pattern or something different? Hope this is worded better. Thanks.

When Chevy changed to fuel injection, they changed the angle where the center intake bolts go through the heads. I've heard they did this in 87, when everything went to fuel injection, but I'm assuming that 85 & 86 TPI also have the new angle. THe only heads that weren't changed to the new angle were the aluminum vette heads. I suppose you could have your intake modified to fit the new heads. And also, new style heads take centerbolt valve covers, so you'd have to change those too.

Vicious is correct. The 87+ heads are centerbolt with a different bolt hole angle, so they wont fit on an <86 car, unless you get a new intake manifold, and valve covers. However the 85-86 LB9 TPI heads will work fine on carb'd cars. However, I do not know if they are any better or worse. I do know that LG4 and L69 heads are the same.

Look, you guys are making this a lot more confusing then it needs to be.
In 87, all IRON SBC heads started coming with the new center intake bolt angle. It had nothing to do with EFI. LG4s and L69s were both made in 87 (and even some carryover L69s in '88 MC SS's), and they came with the new intake bolt angle.
On the same note, 85 and 86 TPI cars have regular old style intake bolt angle.
You can modify an intake made for either set-up to work with either.
And thats all you could possibly need to know about this.
