Engine swap, TPI, TBI or carb?

I have an '81 Elcamino that has a V6. I want to change to a V8. What I am going to do is look for a Camaro, or Firebird V8. I'm not sure if I want a 305 or 350. The main difference in my decision is price. I don't want the fastest ride in town, that's what my T/A is for. I live in CA, so I've got to deal with smog. What I want to know is, opinions on induction. Which one to go with? Thank you.

SS,

I'd go with a plain QuadraJet. That's what the LC V-8s came with in '81, so emissions standards should be very achivable. You'll have a lot of lattitude with a pre-1984 vehicle.

You know, and it pains me to say this but, I would go TPI. Yes, the carb route is better IMHO, but for that "truck" you will need low-end torque, which TPI is great for. Plus being in CA (me too BTW), I don't really know if Elkys came with carb (Vader knows more than myself on this), but you can install an engine that is '81 or newer on your vehicle. So long as you retain all the emissions devices.

I was thinking of the LG4 for the very same reason. But I thought of the TPI, for more power, and less to deal with. (Vacum lines) Also, my air conditioning is on the pass. side and the LG4 is on the driver side. Both the TBI and TPI are on the pass. side, but then I'd have to change the pulley for the serpentine belt. Why can't I ever do anything simple?
