Guide plates, push rods, and SA rockers?

ordered a set of longer than stock push rods from jegs. my engine has comp 1318 SA rockers. the guy at jegs said with the longer push rods i'd need guide plates. when i said it was SA he wasn't sure. the push rods are hardened. i ordered the guide plates thinking i can ask here and return them later if i don't use them or save them for the next engine. jeff if you're wondering it's the 3/4 sized 350.

Ed,

My 3/4ths 350s have been so reliable I've never got into them that deeply. but if they are anything like the 100% 350s, there is no need for guide plates with SA rockers - one or the other, but not both. I suppose it wouldn't hurt, but the plates will only take more of your usable space for rocker adjustment and are overkill. And it the plates to align the rocker tips just right, there will be a battle royale over exactly where the rockers will rest - maybe to the point of eating the rocker bearings or wearing through the rods/plates.

i think the extra height from the guide plates might be a good thing, but i could always use a washer for a shim. i'll dummy it up next week end, if the ups gods smile on me.
never heard of the zinc before. been drinking lot of grapefruit juice, the 100% juice, not from concetrate kind. i hate to take pills so i've stayed away from all the drugs.

There can only be one thing at a time trying to align the rockers. You can't use SA rockers in a motor with guide plates or with the narrow slots in the heads that server teh same purpose; like Vader said, if they don't want to line the rockers up to the same spot, something is going to get torn up.

Are you sure the 4.3 you are working with needs SA rockers? And does it have the machine work for the screw-in studs and guide plates?

yeah rb i figured the guy at jegs was wrong when he said it, but i went ahead and ordered the guide plates any way. yes it had SA rockers from the factory and my aftermarket rockers are SA. and yes i'm sure it has the machine work for screw in studs, i milled the bosses and tapped the holes myself. i'll dummy it up and see how it fits and works before i lock everything down for real. you and vader keep me out of a lot of trouble, thanks for all the help.

Well I guess that's one way of being sure what machine work has been done!!

I believe the best setup would be to exchange the SA rockers for non-SA, and use the guide plates. But the SA rockers and no plates would probably work just as well too. Just don't use both. I don't think you'll affect your adjustment range either way, they should both leave you in good shape there.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing with this motor? Do you recall the one that was on the cover of the Chevy Power Manual back when the BGN guys ran 6s? Hehehehe...

That thing sounds like fun ede, keep us updated. I know I'm interested in seeing (don't kill me fellow SBC diehard fans) something other than a V8 roar down the track.

george it was meant to be a fun project. it's gotten to where it is taking more thinking that i wanted and lot more work. it seems now i'm always waiting on a part to come in and everything is back ordered. at the time i had a 350 iroc, and my son has a 355 i built. my 68 is a 335 SBC so another small block wasn't very interesting. i usually do one or two SBCs a year so the v6 was something differant. i had figured i'd be done last june so you can see how far off i was. i'll be done in a month or so, depending on parts.

Ditto with what was already said. Shouldn't use both. I had a thought though....kinda scary, I know.

When you bought your valves, did you get +.100 long for the SA's? Hate for you to bounce a few retainers around inside them covers........
