here is the deal...i am looking at getting rid of my ss and trading down to an 86 iroc. they want 5500 or so...here is a list of mods and new parts..also the engine has 10k, the tranny has 6k, and the rear has 4k. the interior has been redone from the carpet to leather seats..any input is very appreciated..thanksguys 86 Iroc Z-28 355 SBC (350 bored .030 over)

So the owner obviously raced the hell out of the car. There is a lot to be said about buying someone elses race car. Who did the work? Was it the owner? Does he know what hes doing? Did he learn it by working on this car? Buy a cheap stocker and do the work yourself. If you buy a race car, or have this guy do the engine, this guy do the tranny, that guy do the suspension, I dont see how you can take much pride in it. Do you pride yourself on how well your TV works? No, why, because all you did was buy it.
i would definately not trade down from a 99SS to an 86 iroc. if youre looking at trading down from a 99SS, you need to find something a lot sweeter than that. dont get me wrong, i love my iroc, but i still dont think the trade that youre showing here is worth your while. just my opinion.

You are crazy...
I love IROC's and all, but going from a 99 SS to an 86 IROC is insane. The SS is reliable, most likely has good warrenties, gets pretty good gas mileage, and is already pretty darn fast (13.7 is a great street car time, especially for a mostly stock reliable daily driver). With the IROC you are gonna have a completly customized car, that had all kinds of work done to it by god only knows who.
Be careful what you do, and be sure to make the right choice.

btt...thanks for the replies guys......but for me it is more of a money situation..i do have another car so it wont be a daily driver...it will stay in the garage...i just jumped into the ss. most guys buy something like that have good down payment or cash. i didnt have either..and being at my age(23) just isnt the right car for me now...give me a few more years and it would be a different story. as far as the car, i was just looking for some of the guys who have older irocs to give their opinion on the car, not whether or not i should lose the ss. but thanks for the replies anyways..ben

well you said you dont have emissions yet in your county...maybe they will soon...and now Whitman is head of the EPA she might push for this crap all over the counrty, just like she did here in Jersey. also how did he get true duals on the car? i havent tried it myself but i know most people say its hard if its possible at all. and like the others said, its not so wise to buy someone else's project car...you just dont know all the details about it and how everything is set up. for example i put an electric fan in my car, and if someone else bought it they would have a hard time figuring out how to troubleshoot it, simply because its my own custom install and there is no diagram for it anywhere etc you get what im saying? you are better off building something yourself so you know it inside and out.

Well I respect the cash flow situation, and some times you gotta go with the flow, I will say that I love the heck out of the 3rd Gen F bodies, its just that in some aspects youll be stepping down, and yeah man it sucks to spend that kind of money to step down, with that said, I can only say that I agree with the post that said buy stock and build up--unless you know the who's and the where's of all the work on this car with the reputations involved, its a hard call. I will also say that one of my first cars was a 1968 Chevelle SS with a worked 396 big block, and yeah I payed some heavy coin for it--it was beutiful inside and out--anyway the motor died in the Second month I had it, and NO I wasent killing it to death either, when my mechanic pulled it apart he said that who ever had built it had made some crucial mistakes and he was surprised that it ran as long as it did, it broke my heart as well as my bank account to have re-done, I tell ya there is a lesson here....

If you have to sell that SS I would sell it and hold out for a little while till you found a near perfect IROC Z, with no mods to it what so ever. You could pick one of these up pretty cheap compared to a 99 SS. I think it's always great to find a completely stock vehicle then do your own mods. I speak from experience.

I would personally look for something that hasn't been played with by someone else. There are quite a few near-mint condition IROCs out there, and even plenty with a healthy 355 under the hood. Find something you can drive whenever you want, without having to worry about making too much noise, or having every cop in the neighborhood look for you.
A race car is great if you plan on making a serious habit out of it. But even then, I think I'd have to say I'd rather make one out of my own doing instead of buying one that is the product of someone else's hard work. Nothing wrong with it, it just feels better when you know you have a well-oiled machine that works as great as it does because of what your hands have done.
Anyway, I'd look for something between '87 and '90, that is relatively un-touched, with at least a healthy 350, 4-wheel disks, and a near-perfect chassis. Good luck in your search, and let us know how it turns out. - John '89 L98
