Purpose of tube on air cleaner on TBI cars

I was just wondering what the purpose of the tube on the passenger side of the air cleaner that connects to the valve covers is. I installed an open element and put a breather in it's place, but what was the tube's original purpose?

Any help is appreciated,

Jason

It was also a breather....it simply located the filter in the AC housing so that under high blowby / low vacuum conditions (when the PCV isn't working) all that extra evaporated oil will still find it's way into your intake through your air filter and TB.

89,

This is the filtered air supply for the PCV system vent. The PCV draws air through the crankcase, and this tube supplies clean air into the crankcase. If you eliminate the stock air cleaner, you can install a breather-type oil filler cap to admit air to the crankcase and plug the existing opening. However, many aftermarket air cleaners have a provision for the vent tube. You just have to punch out the formed opening in the air cleaner base and install the correct hose fitting. Your choice.

Thanks for the help fellas. Just wondering b/c on page 14 of the latest GMHTP they say that it's detrimental to the PCV system to install a breather. I thought having a breather made the PCV system much more effective since it could keep "refreshing" the air in the crankcase. Otherwise the excess pressure sucked out by the PCV valve may not have all been the blow-by gases and just air in there. It would seem to me this could create a partial vacuum in the crankcase if a breather wasn't installed, depending on how the PCV valve works. Any thoughts?

Jason
