replacement engine,need simple ,economical solution.

I'm here in boston visting family for the holidays,...and I will not be driving back to virginia this week. I've decided to leave the car here if I can find a good machine shop that will install a regular or slightly modified chevy 5.7 for a resonable price.it's an '84 trans am with a 305 HO ,700r4.the 305 ate the timing chain(cheap aluminum cam gear) and it is unreasonable to try to revive this engine anymore.I'm planning on spending $2-3000 for a decent "stock" remanufactured 5.7l. whats a good GM crate engine to use?

the gm targetmaster is a very good and affordable engine. I believe it is rated around 240hp which isn't bad for a slight increase in power but don't expect to be a street killer. The targetmaster runs about 1200-1700 and has a 3yr 36k mile warranty which makes rebuilding a stock engine out of the question since you'll spend about a grand to rebuild a stock type 350 and you still have used parts where the targetmaster is 100% brand new and comes with everything from the timing cover to the valve covers and oil pan. just slap on an intake, balancer water pump and externals and install it.

JYD,

The TargetMaster is a good value. The GMPP 350HO is also a good value at just under $3,000. It includes a brand new everything except the car and accessories - intake, balancer, distributor, and tuned Holley 650 included. 330HP and 380 ft/lb are fairly respectable. The Vortec heads, nodular iron crank, four-bolt mains and powdered metal rods are a good basis for an engine up to 450 HP if you ever decide on a cam swap/head improvement. The engine has a static compression of 9.1:1, so 89 octane fuel is very friendly. $2,995.00 at SDPC. The same engine is just over $2000.00 if you use your intake, carb, distributor, etc.
