where is my MAT (mainfold air temp sensor) located?
since I have to have my car smogged tomorrow, i need to clear my ecm of puking up codes, one of those codes were # 23( check the mat sensor wiring and connectors, replace the MAT) well i bought a replacement for my 89 camaro RS, 305 TBI.
it looks like the same thing that plugs right into my intake manifold, but according to my haynes camaro manual, in the revised chapter (85-89 camaros) it says its in the air cleaner.. so where is it really? i cant check now cuz its raining and dark but i will tomorrow. anyone confirm this location for me ? thanks!

its in the left side of the air cleaner, screwed into an npt fitting on the underside of the airbox. Make sure its plugged in or itll trip the SES light.

heres a shot of the filter. i cirlced the only two things protruding through the bottom. neither look like the part i bought today. hwoever it does look like what screws right into the intake manifold next to the water inlet the rubber hose goes on.
sorry for the bad pics, ****ty *** camera breakin on me

the rear circled item is the IAT. The front circled item is teh thermal vacuum switch for the thermac. Just unplug the connector and the vacuum hose, flip the aircleaner over and unscrew the IAT to replace it. The part you have is correct. The only thing youll see from the top is the plastic screen over the thermal couple

im sorry i dont think i got the correct part, this matches exactly the coolant temp sensor located in the front of the manifold. also their is no room for a hose to hook up to this peice i bought. i only paid 8 bucks for it. does that sound right?

Here are a few pics I just took of mine plus some info right out of my Chiltons. That is the coolant temp sensor your parts guy sold you & is found at the front of the intake right next to the thermostat housing just as you said. There are no hoses required for the MAT only the electrical connector that plugs into it from under your air cleaner. There are two hoses that connect to the Thermal Vacuum Switch though, one to the base of the throttle body & the other to the Thermac out on the snout of the air cleaner. To be continued...Chiltons illustration in next thread(file was too large).

ya thats what i thought it was, my parts store gave me the wrong part. i took out my coolent temp sensor and it matched identically, and the mat sensor is like 24 bucks. I dont now why after i posted the pic of it, people said it was the right part, it was to big too long and it was threaded. prolly bad picture quality oh well, i had it taken care of. this thread may die in peace now . thanks for your help simpleman.

on mine the silloette of the IAT lookes very similar to the CTS. It has a similar connector and the body has 1/2 in. NPT threads that screw into the air cleaner. Inside the hollow aluminum case there is a plastic housing sticking out the end with a thermalcouple inside. Sorry about the confusion, i didnt know they changed sensors for the newer model years. The ones for the 89+ look completely different from my 88 tbi. Not only that but they use a semi-conducter as well instead of a bi-metallic junction. Oh well, learn something new every day.
