How do you get factory shift light to work?

Does the ECM control the shift light in the instrument panel? It stopped working when I disabled the ECM by cutting the harness.
Is it possible to wire the shift light without turning the ECM back on?

I'm pretty sure that answer is no. You can look best you can that any wires within aren't shorted, etc, but I'm pretty sure that's run off the ECM or your distributor. As you are probably aware, it only comes on at part throttle upshifts for economy reasons, and on uphills if you're in too tall a gear to pull the hill at part throttle. Best bet of course would be to mount a remote shift light behind your console and drill a small hole in the front of the dash for a covert-appearing shift light. I know there's a guy selling small, pen-light sized shift lights in the for sale section in camaroz28.com for under $40, which is a sweet deal for what they are.
