305 engine buildup

I am new to engine building and was wondering what componets would be best to use when building a 305 HO to make 300 horsepower. I need ideas on pistons, rods, rockers, cam, head work, block work, ect I want to swap in a 350 but I am not sure if I will pass california emissions with it.

I appreciate any help

Daniel- if your engine is the 305 HO motor I think it is (L-69) then a 350 swap will get you what you seek for a lot less money and a lot less headache. 305s are not bad motors but they are actually MORE expensive to make go fast that just doing the "cubic inch copout" and buying a 350. Also, with the carbureted L-69 you can literally bolt everything onto a 350, it will haul serious backside PLUS the emissions ***** never even have to know you are packing and extra 45 cubic inches (emissions tests aren't THAT strict yet)!

GM sells a complete 350 universal replacement 350 that will slide right under your intake for about $1250 and packs a 250HP wallop, 60 more than a stock L-69! Not enough? Swap out the low-performance heads and stock L-69 intake for a set of decent aftermarket ones and gain another 30, without breaking a sweat. Just some ideas.

Well, in one of my Best of Hot Rod books, they took a stock L03 and threw on a 3" cat, cat-back and TES headers, L98 Vette Heads, a custom yet fairly mild cam, and an Edelbrock Performer intake with an adapter for the TBI. The set-up made 285 HP with an extremally flat torque curve, and that was with the stock TB. I bet with the Holley TBI they would have gotten rid of that bottle neck and jumped over 300 HP easily. Hope this helps. . .

89BLWNRS,

What book # is it and the title?

DAMON,

It's true about suping up 305's but it's good to be different. also, I think they make stroker kits to up the ante to something like 345cubic inches. somneone correct me if I'm wrong.

i think to hit 300hp you are going to definately need some good heads be them L98 aluminums or 305 vortecs (or milled anything else but then you run into other problems )

im not sure 416's will cut it with any cam thats gonna keep you under 6000 but i could be wrong

im running a 214/224 flat tappet, single plane, and ported 416's and i guesstimate im putting down about 270 hp

some vette heads would put me over the top and i could use them on a 350

but if you are doing a ground up buildup it makes much more sense to start off with a 350, cubes are where its at, and, the CA smog ***** wont be able to tell the difference

If you're going carbureted, look in the tech section of www.hioutput.com ,there are a couple of 305 buildups in there.

A .030 over 305 stroker is a 334. If one were to consider this, unless you're really really into 305's this, is a complete waste of time and money, since a 383 would be cheaper, and have a ton of torque. I like 305's, very reliable and can be quick, but that is insane money for what it is. If I had the xtra $, it would be interesting though, especially if it was a non-smog motor.
