It's supposed to come on during startup so you know that the bulb etc is ok. Just a safety measure - if it ever doesn't come on you should check it out. To check codes - there's a panel underneath the dash roughly below the cigarette lighter with twelve holes (the aldl panel). Bend a paper clip into a U shape and put the ends in the two rightmost holes on the top row. Then turn the key to on, but don't start the engine. The Check Engine Soon light will flash three times for every code. It always starts and ends the list of codes with "12". So it flashes once, then twice, once, then twice, once, then twice. After this it flashes in a similar manner for any codes you might have set. For instance, code 34 would be three flashes, then four, three, four, three, four. You know you're at the end of the list when you get to 12 again. You can find out what the codes mean in Haynes, Chilton's, or Helm or just post on here someone will know.
