Problems with starter
Hello i was wondering if anyone can help me...i have a black 87 trans am with a 400 engine (from the 70's)..all i know about the car is that it used to have a 305 engine.. the problem i have is that about every month or so my starter messes up..it does a grinding noise...and i dont know what to do...i am barely getting into cars and i would appreciate help thanks

You probably need to shim the starter. The easiest way I've found to do this is to remove the solenoid and manually pust the starter gear into the flywheel (flexplate) and try to insert a normal sized paperclip between the starter teeth and the flywheel. If you can't. insert a shim between the outer bolt and the block. If you can with ease, insert a shim between the inside starter bolt and block. These shims can be picked up at any auto parts store.
