Carb to TPI
Carb to TPI
I've posted messages about this before and I still have some questions. I currently have an 84 Camaro sport coupe with a carbureted 305 (LG4). I have recently pulled out a 350 TPI motor out of an 89 Trans Am GTA and a 305 TPI motor out of an 85 IROC. I took the engine harnesses and computers out of both. I even took the dash harness from the IROC. I will be putting in the 350, and using parts from the 305 if necessary. My questions are:
1. Are the dash harnesses between TPI and Carb different in any way? Will I need to replace mine?
2. What have you guys done with the fuel situation - did you just use a stock TPI tank with the pump inside? Did you use the TPI fuel lines, or order new ones? If so, where?
3. What else am I going to need? Any other problems I may come across? ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

as far as i know three isn't any differances in the harness for the dash. each engine has it's own unique harness going from the engine sensers to the ecm. i think the tanks are differant between carbed and efi cars. if so swapping tanks would be the easy way to go. i'd replace the fuel pump while i was doing it to be safe. not sure if you'd need a new (larger) line or not. if you would easiest thing would be to run new hard line, i don't think you can buy prebent replacement lines.

The dash harnesses are only slightly different, so its easier just to modify your current one, than to swap it out.
As for the fuel, the tanks are the same, but the sending unit is different. I bought a fuel sender and fuel lines from thirdgenparts.com for dirt cheap. New fuel lines are available from GM, but your looking to spend about $100 for all seven of them, which woulndn't inlude the sender. Shop around the boneyards and such for one.
I did the same swap 6 weeks ago, so it is still a little fresh in my head.

I did the swap on a 86 Camaro from LG4 to L98. The dash harnesses are differant I can tell you but don't replace it, modifiy it.
Here's the differances I found on my car using the factory service manual. http://www.geocities.com/millicanga/TpiWiring.jpg
The C207 and C221 connectors are on the engine harness next to the computer. The panel harness will have the C207 but not the C221.
The dashed wires are existing and the solid wires are new.
E-mail me specific questions if you have problems.

Thanks John. The reason I didn't give specifics was because I didn't use a factory harness, I used Painless Wiring harness #60103 so what I had to modify would be different.
