What the heck is this?
Yesterday I went to change my sparkplugs on my 89 Camaro (LO3), which might I add is impossible, and I noticed something very odd. I went to reach for the last sparkplug on the drivers side closest to the firewall and I felt something hanging there. There is a bolt with the typical hex head and then a square nect that turns into a threaded bolt in the end. If goes in a hole eith on the valve cover or the head, maybe the block. It's about 3-4 inches long. It was covered in oil as was that spark plug I was trying to change. I foind the hold that it goes in, but it doesn't screw in or anything it just falls bacj out. Does antone know what this is, what it does or where it goes? Also on another note, does anyone know how to change the spark plugs on these engines? I can only reach on on the passenger side and 2 on the drivers. Thanks for any info.

When I change my sparkplugs, I just run the car up on a set of ramps and change the hard ones from under the car. a lot easier to reach and I can lay down on the job to boot. Your bolt sounds like it might have been in the hole above the oil sending unit near the oil pump. There used to be two components in that system, the oil sending unit and the oil pressure switch until they combined the two into one unit.

It looks like there is a wire attached to it. I cant remember off hand, but I think it's under that little guard down there. Will it hurt anything if I can't screw it in? Am I loosing compression because of that? I wanna know so I can get my car running! Is that in the block or head or what? I almost seems like it's at the very end of the head. Thanks for the help Trickster, I could call you my own personal hero, you always answer my questions!

Turns out that it's the bolt closest to the firewall on the exhaust manifold, the bolt has nothing to screw into. I'm probably gonna have to retap it until I get new heads. Damn car!

I have the same car with the same motor. I can get to the first 3 plugs on both sides from up top. On the passenger side you reach from the front of the motor underneath the A/C compressor to get to them. On the driver's side the third one back is probably the hardest. To get to the back plug on each side, it's far easier to jack the car up and get to them from underneath. The first time I changed my plugs, it probably took an hour and a half. I've got it down to about 20-30 minutes these days.
