Consequences of an improper hatch pattern in bores?

What happens if the hatch pattern in an engine is less than ideal? At not nearly a steep enough angle...to be exact. What happens?

I assume you are talking about cross-hatch in a cylinder bore?

The effects, hmmmm..... Probably nothing serious. It doesn't have to be perfect, why do you ask?

Well cuz I have a block here more or less ready to go, but I honed the bores and I couldn't get the drill nearly slow enough to reach a 60 degree angle. Since I'm a cheap bastard, and would have to take off work to get to the machine shop, I'm debating just leaveing it alone.

If you are talking about the crosshatch pattern for the cylinder bore, yes it does matter. Most ring manufacturers recommend a 20*-30* crosshatch patterns, some a little more. Without the ring manufacturers specified crosshatch pattern, you can get into proper lubrication and eventually a sealing problem with the rings. The crosshatch pattern you put on the cylinder walls is part of the equation for proper ring lubrication and is VERY important for longevity in any engine build-up, stock or performance.
Proper crosshatch pattern may not seem like a big deal, but it really is. I’ve seen people ruin new rings because of lubrication problems due to improper crosshatch pattern or have had drastically shortened ring to cylinder wall wear.
Hope this helps.

No wonder any my rebuilt motors back in Pakistan never lasted even half as long before being torn down. The dumba$$ mechanics over there think it's enough to merely rebore or resleeve the cylinder bores. No cross hatch=no lubrication=short engine life. Duh, now I get it!!
